He earned the Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and
completed residency training in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery from Georgetown University Hospital and affiliate hospitals, which included The Washington Hospital Center and The Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

He is board certified in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and has active memberships in the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Marshall County Medical Society, and the Alabama Society of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Trotter is on active staff of Marshall Medical Center North and has served in several capacities, including the Executive Committee and Chief of Surgery.
Dr. Trotter has been married to his wife Wanda for 39 years. They have four children and thirteen grandchildren. He enjoys time with his family and pursuing his interest in music, particularly traditional Irish music. He is an accomplished Irish flute and whistle player, having played with various bands in the north Alabama area.
